When stock prices are falling, the question on most investors’ minds is “when will it stop?” But did you know that you can make money when the market is heading down? This is not a secret as almost all traders know (they ought to know!) about shorting. In our stock trading classes, we discuss stock trading strategies that let you short the market. Supply and Demand

Conversely, if demand for a particular issue is low and the supply or volume of stocks for sale in the marketplace is high, prices will tend to decline. The Overall Health of the Economy/Interest Rates
During flush economic times, investors of all types generally have lots of money to invest. As they put their money to work by investing in individual issues or mutual funds, which often hold positions in dozens and sometimes even hundreds of issues, equity prices tend to rise. On the flip side, during a recession or a period of slow economic growth, investors will be more reluctant or even unable to commit investment dollars. This can lead to a decrease in demand for equities and, by extension, a decrease in stock prices. However, as traders we should be able to make money regardless of market conditions. An example of what can happen to equities when the economy slows can be found in an analysis of the period after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. In fact, within a few months after the attacks many firms, particularly in the financial sector, fired swaths of employees and, as a result, the economy began to slow. This translated into less investing; the stock market responded by trending lower for the first three quarters of 2002.

Interest rates and their direction can also have a dramatic impact on the economy and the stock market. Lower interest rates stimulate borrowing by investors, individuals and companies. Emerging markets have been one of the hottest investment areas since the early 2000s, with new funds and new ways to invest popping up all the time. From 2000-2011, emerging market economies have swelled to include Brazil, China, India, Russia – collectively known as the BRIC nations – as well as Vietnam, South Africa and many more depending on how tightly or loosely you define “emerging” as opposed to “developing.” Generally speaking, investors and economists are looking for a sweet spot where the political and social growing pains have largely ended and the economic growth has just begun. As you’ve probably guessed, this is easier said than done. These are the risks that have gone away to an extent and allow traders and investors to participate in the market without fear of losing their principal.

Emerging Market Risks
What are the risks of investing in emerging markets? Being late and being wrong are two risks. Of course those are the general risks. But what about the risks once you have entered the market. Missing the Train
Being late is the more common of the two risks. By now it is no secret that China is an emerging market that is becoming an economic powerhouse. What is Successful trading

This question about successful day trading seems to get posed a lot, what is successful day trading? Well there is not one right answer to that question. It’s all relative.

To someone who has $30,000 of day trading risk capital, his/her daily goal from his day trading strategies might be $400/day. Well of course that is not going to make him super rich, but he will still be successful because he has achieved his goal and he is making a living doing what he likes- day trading.

Now someone who has a hundred thousand dollars of day trading risk capital, making $400 a day would be unacceptable because for the kind of risk you would be taking, you should be making more.

Remember you must design your day trading system based on what kind of trading personality you have. If you are aggressive, then you day trading strategies should obviously be ones that go for bigger gains. But remember with bigger gains comes bigger risk. If you are conservative, then trying to make $700-$1000 could be a more reasonable and achievable goal.
